Wollongong’s Town Hall Laneway will enjoy a creative overhaul this week with the launch of the Town Hall Laneway Art Projects.
The projects, which are part of Council’s Public Art Program, features two components – the Sound Art and the Art Light 2018 projects.
The Sound Art Project is by artists Andrew Gilholme, Jane Aubourg and Julian Day and will see pedestrians greeted with sounds as they move through the passageway between Wollongong Town Hall and Wollongong Art Gallery.
These sounds include the chanting and ringing of the bell at the Nan Tien temple, or an auditory representation of the waterhole once found in this location.
The Art Light Projection Project has been developed by artists Daniel Breda, Andrew Gilholme and Abhiruchi Chhikara and features digital artworks that will be projected onto the walkway. The works include two lovers dancing through Wollongong with lights attached to their clothes and patterns and kaleidoscope effects.
All of the artworks are designed to bring light, colour and sound into the thoroughfare that links the Arts Precinct with Kembla Street.
“Council is working to find new and innovative ways to add colour and texture to our City,’’ Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
“This project is another example of that. It encourages people to discover something new, to inspire people to walk and explore different parts of Wollongong and adds another layer of vibrancy to our City’s artistic space.
“It also provides an opportunity for Council to support and facilitate our community’s innovoative and talented artists.’’
As part of the project, the Wollongong Lower Town Hall Creative Spaces studios will be open to the public between 6.30-7.30pm on Thursday 13 December. People will be able to visit the studios and meet the artists responsible for the new works.
