Council will soon begin its roll out of CCTV and smart lighting after Councillors gave the project the green light at last night’s meeting.

Councillors voted to award a $541,000 tender to OneWiFi & Infrastructure to install smart lighting and CCTV at Sturt Park and Patton Park, and smart lighting at Council's Administrative Centre.

CCTV will be used to monitor Council assets such as play equipment to deter vandalism, while the smart lighting will feature a series of lamps powered by both solar panels and small wind turbines.

The tender will also include the purchase of an "Internet Of Things" (IOT) Platform to act as a data hub for the technology.

Council's Chief Financial Officer, Jay Nankivell, said the project would improve public safety and also increase energy efficiency.

"This is a project under our Smart Communities Framework that we've been keen to roll out for some time, and we're pleased that we have a solution that is both affordable and sustainable," he said.

"The fixtures will utilise a hybrid of solar and wind technology to power the lights and CCTV, providing a saving on operating costs while reducing Council's carbon footprint.

"It's a smart and sustainable project that will allow us to deliver the CCTV in our parks that the public have requested, while also providing a long-overdue upgrade of lighting."

Mr Nankivell said OneWifi would travel to Broken Hill next week to conduct a site visit and begin plans for construction.

This project is supported through the Federal Government's Smart Cities and Suburbs program and Safer Communities program.
