Byron Bay’s brand new Bayshore Drive roundabout on Ewingsdale Road will be open to traffic in both directions from Thursday 13 December 2018.

“We are so pleased to be opening the new roundabout before Christmas despite the rain during October and the disruptions this caused,” Council’s Manager Works, Tony Nash said.

“There will be some minor works for the contractor to complete in coming weeks and they will be removing their equipment at the completion of the job - but this will not impact on roundabout traffic

“Council is mindful of holiday traffic and wanted to get the roundabout opened to reduce congestion on busy Ewingsdale Road,” Mr Nash said.

Access to Bayshore Drive and the Arts and Industrial Estate will also return to normal.

“We’ve been working closely with the contractor SEE Civil to get the job delivered so that traffic can flow smoothly in and out of Byron Bay and the Arts and Industrial Estate as we move into the busy summer holiday season,” Mr Nash said.

“I would especially like to thank business owners and residents in the industrial and Sunrise estates for their patience during the construction of the second half of the roundabout and throughout the project,” he said.

People who use Byron’s Ewingsdale Road regularly will also notice the installation of a new piece of public art in the middle of the roundabout.

The towering 12 metre sculpture of the Cape Byron Lighthouse was commissioned by Council’s Public Art Panel, following an Expression of Interest process in June this year.

Created by artist Corey Thomas, it depicts a silhouette of the lighthouse through thousands of stainless steel birds and aims to showcase the area’s strong creative and artistic community.

The new $5.6 million Bayshore Drive Roundabout is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and Byron Shire Council.
