Fairfield City Councillor Dai Le, Mayor Frank Carbone and Councillor Sera Yilmaz with butterflies by the “Chrysalis-mas Tree”.Christmas is flying into Cabramatta on the wings of butterflies this holiday season with the installation of a “Chrysalis-mas Tree” near Cabramatta’s Pailau Gate.
The tree will be adorned with three perspex ornaments containing monarch and common eggfly butterfly chrysalides, or pupae.
As the chrysalides hatch over the next three weeks, the butterflies will emerge from the tree and are free to fly away.
Staff will monitor and regularly clean the ornamental enclosures during the three weeks.
Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the tree is just one way Council is helping residents celebrate this festive season.
“The Chrysalis-mas Tree is a new, fun, unique and environmentally-friendly celebration of Christmas in our City,” Mayor Carbone said.
“When the butterflies emerge, they will fly away to our local parks and be part of the environment for all residents to enjoy.
“This Christmas, Council has again installed our popular Christmas nativity lights at roundabouts, and for the first time, has lit up the trees along Horsley Drive near Horsley Park Reserve leading to a display at the reserve itself.
“These lights bring joy to local residents and especially brighten up the journey home from work for many in our community.”
The lights are in place at the corner of Restwell and Mimosa roads, Bossley Park; Prairie Vale and Moonlight roads, Prairiewood; Melbourne and Edensor roads, Bonnyrigg; Canley Vale and Bulls roads, Wakeley; Court Road and The Crescent, Fairfield; and Smithfield Road and Polding Street, Smithfield.
