Metung is walking further Friday 14 December

A new section of the Metung Boardwalk will be open to the public this weekend, ahead of Metung’s peak holiday period.

The East Gippsland Shire Council project is extending the Metung Boardwalk by 325 metres from Riviera Nautic to the corner of Rosherville Road.

Council’s contractor, local firm Jarvis Norwood, will have approximately 155 metres of the new boardwalk open from the current termination point at Riviera Nautic to the Edgewater Terraces private jetty. The remaining 195 metres will be completed after Christmas.

Council’s Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said all piles and most of the crossheads have been installed along the remaining length, which provides the structure to which the boardwalk will soon be attached.

“The majority of the work after Christmas will involve installation of, decking and kerb rails,” Ms Weigall said.

“Construction works will continue throughout the holiday period, but will be from the water side only and is unlikely to affect traffic or pedestrian movements along Metung Road during this period. Boating activity will not be impacted either and access to all private jetties in this area will be maintained.”

Construction is now expected to be completed in early February 2019.

The $1.015 million project is funded by council and the Victorian and Australian governments. The project was identified as a high priority in the Metung Nungurner Community Plan as it provides a safe pedestrian connection from the end of the current boardwalk to Chinaman’s Creek.
