Blacktown City Council has paid a special tribute to Father Peter Confeggi who is retiring after many years of service to Blacktown City and to the Catholic Church.
Father Peter read the prayer at the opening of last week’s Council Meeting and was the subject of a Mayoral Minute during proceedings. He was also presented with a Certificate of Commendation.
Father Peter joined the Franciscans order in 1970 and studied theology in Melbourne and Paris before serving in parishes across Sydney as well as teaching in East Africa between 1990 and 1994.
Blacktown City Mayor Stephen Bali MP said Father Peter served in the parishes of St Marys, Greystanes, Castle Hill and Mount Druitt before arriving in Blacktown in 2008.
The parish of Blacktown comprises two churches; St Michael’s and St Patrick’s, five schools and has an average of 2,300 people attending Mass every week.
“In the years at Blacktown Father Peter worked tirelessly to bring communities together and to ensure that everyone feels at home in the community which he leads. His strength is being with people, hearing people's stories and being the face of Christ to them,” Mayor Bali said.
“Tonight we thank Father Peter Confeggi and pay tribute to him as a great and devoted community leader. His legacy is one of inclusion and compassion. He leaves a foundation of great strength for his parish and, therefore, for our City.
“We thank him for his great service to Blacktown City and wish him well in his retirement,” Mayor Bali said.
Father Peter thanked Council and the people of Blacktown City for their support and friendship.
“Blacktown is a wonderful city filled with wonderful people. Our diversity is our strength and an example to the rest of Australia,” Father Peter said.
