Competition opens for Indigenous artists

Entries are now open for the newly named Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards (MMIAA).
Formerly known as the Far West Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Prize, the competition aims to provide an opportunity to showcase and celebrate art works and creativity in the Far West by both young and mature Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
The MMIAA offers $5500 in prize money for 2D and 3D artworks across a variety of mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film, and a range of others.
Council's Cultural Facilities Manager, Tara Callaghan, said the competition's new title acknowledges Maari Ma's ongoing financial support of Indigenous art in the region.
"We wanted a title that reflected Maari Ma's support of this competition, they've made a significant financial contribution as the event's major sponsor since its inception," she said.
"The old title was also quite a mouthful, so this change will assist with marketing and promotion of the competition."
The MMIAA, which is also supported by West Darling Arts, will be judged at the official opening on 1 March, 2019.
