Calling all families for Byron Bay NYE

Published on 18 December 2018

New Year’s Eve 2018 in Byron Bay will be focused on families, friends and community with the finishing touches being put on plans for this year’s celebration.

The hub of activities will be Jonson Street which will be closed to traffic on 31 December and transformed into a blaze of colour, music and culinary delights when Soul Street comes alive from 4pm on 31 December.

Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, said he’s hoping people from across the Shire will make their way into Byron Bay for New Year’s Eve to celebrate the end of 2018 with family and friends.

“The focus for New Year’s Eve celebrations in Byron Bay is all about community and enjoying what our Shire is so famous for – great music, good food and amazing company,” Mayor Richardson said.

“This event is not just for Byron Bay residents and I am hoping that people from around the Shire will join in the celebrations.

“New Year’s Eve in Byron Bay is an evening for people of all ages – from the very young to the young at heart,” Mayor Richardson said.

“Jonson Street, and all public areas in Byron Bay, will be alcohol-free zones and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated so people who are looking to party won’t find what they are looking for in Byron,” he said.

People can expect to be dazzled and entertained by musicians, fire performers, cabaret and circus acts.  People can also groove to their own tunes at the silent disco.

Railway Park will be a kids zone and they will have their own ‘little souls’ disco.

There will be no fireworks or gathering on the beach for the countdown to 2019.  Instead people will be treated to a ‘big’ drumming event by RePercussion and Creatrix Fire Phoenix who will count everyone into the New Year.

First Sun is on again at the Cape Byron to welcome the first break of day in 2019 at the most easterly point of Australia’s mainland.
