The contributions and accomplishments of all our nominees will be celebrated at the Australia Day Ceremony on Saturday 26 January 2019 at the Lennox Head Community Centre.

Australia Day Award Nominees and Winners 2018Citizen of the year - Grahame Marlowe
As an ex-student of Ballina High School, Grahame gives back to his secondary school by helping students with special needs. Grahame is a proud Bundjalung man, shares a deep respect of his culture and people, wanting all of us to live collaboratively and cooperatively in a community that respects past and present Bundjalung people and country. Grahame has always been gracious in providing the Welcome to Country when called upon. An avid Sydney Rabbitohs supporter, you’ll often see Grahame on his mobility scooter decked out in his beloved team colours and ready for a conversation. Grahame is always cheerful with a positive outlook, respectful, well respected and involved; all the attributes that epitomise being named the Ballina Shire Citizen of the Year.
For over 30 years Phil has helped many thousands of families through some very difficult times, officiating funerals for many years. A compassionate and caring man, involved in so many community initiatives such as Crowley Nursing Home, Ballina Youth Clubs, Legacy, a regular volunteer for the Catholic Church, and he also helps at the Ballina Hospital. This Local Hero award recognises Phil as a quiet achiever who just gets things done with no fuss and no expectation of reward.

Sam Marriott Graham Marlowe Michael Koellner Meredith Baylis Leonie Dahl Francis Quinn Judith Zuill Lt Wes and Debbie BustBen won the double at the 2017 Australian Surf Festival, taking out the Over 40’s Logger and Longboard National Titles. Ben is the second person to ever win the double in the same year. Ben uses his passion for surfing to engage troubled youth, the elderly and people with disabilities. He is a member of the NSW Surf Lifesaving Association and the Lennox Longboard Club. Ben combines his love of sport to make a difference in our community.
Nominees:
Sebastian graduated Year 12 last year. During his secondary schooling at Southern Cross K-12 Sebastian was heavily involved in school and community activities. Sebastian was a driving force of the Student Representative Council, a proficient public speaker and consistently recognised by his peers for his leadership skills, but also kindness and compassion in considering the needs of all students. In 2017 Sebastian accumulated over 300 volunteer hours, quite a feat considering his community commitments and HSC studies. Sebastian’s community involvement and contribution is an enviable list including walking a youth record distance of 60km for Ballina Relay for Life, chair of the Ballina Junior Chamber of Commerce, five years as school SRC representative, active member of the Ballina Players, active member of the Gold Coast Roller Derby community and Leo Club executive member.
Freda has devoted her whole life to the service of others, helping vulnerable children in our community. Freda and her husband Peter have provided a loving and caring home for almost 20-children, as well as their biological children. On moving to Lennox Head, Freda was appointed Head Gymnastic Coach at the Byron Bay Services Gymnastic Club taking groups of children to compete in the best sporting facilities in Australia. Aside from her gymnastics involvement, Freda has been the genesis of positive change for many young people; putting everything on hold to ensure they have the best possible upbringing so that they may grow into outstanding citizens. Her compassion for her children, grandchildren and people in general is unwavering.

Leonard Rix Thelma Riches Richard Parker2017 Ballina Country Music Festival was a roaring success staged over three days in November with over 10,000 people in attendance. Visitors travelled from all over New South Wales, Australia and internationally to celebrate country music and inject tourism dollars into our local economy. The festival is now recognised as a major regional country music festival, and a change in format by moving the festival markets to Cherry Street, was an overwhelming success with festival goers.
