Albany Cycle Club back on track

After a 40-year hiatus, Albany Cycling Club returned to the Centennial Park Sporting Precinct this week to hold its first race day around what is one of only two tracks of its kind in the State.

The City of Albany has worked closely with the Albany Cycling Club as a part of the sporting redevelopment to facilitate the club’s return to racing within the precinct by tailoring the promenade and pathways to support a cycling circuit.

Surrounded by grass and limited traffic, the new circuit will provide juniors with a safe environment to introduce them to cycling whether that is for racing, riding for fun or commuting.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the inclusion of the cycling circuit was just another way the City was promoting healthy communities and lifestyles.

“It’s fantastic to see the Albany Cycling Club back at Centennial Park, and we hope it inspires more people in the community to take up the sport of cycling,” Mayor Wellington said.

“The only other circuit of its kind in the state is at the Midland velodrome, and this track is a testament to the City’s commitment to encouraging sporting excellence and enjoyment.”

Albany Cycling Club President Tony Heslop said the club was excited about the new facilities.

“It’s a significant moment for the club, with closed circuit racing in a safe environment allowing more junior members to participate in the sport,” he said. “We would love to see anyone who has access to a bike in Albany come along to a club meet and give the sport a go.”

The club held its first race day on Tuesday, December 18 and has exclusive use of the eastern precinct race circuit on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s from 4 to 8 pm, and Sunday’s from 6am to 11am during the summer months. The circuit will be closed off to the general community to enable club racing at these times.  

Please follow the traffic and pedestrian management signage and keep your dog on lead to ensure safe use of the precinct.
