Santa Claus won’t be the only one at work early this Christmas Day, as local garbage collectors start their shift earlier than usual in order to be able to also share in the joy of Christmas with their families.
As Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year, Council’s waste contractors Cleanaway will commence the regular Tuesday collection at the earlier time of 4am.
Moree Plains Shire Council’s Waste Manager, Tahra Sayers explained the earlier than usual start to the collection means residents need to ensure that they put their bins out on the street the night before.
“We know that Christmas Eve is a hectic time for all, but want to ensure that people do not miss out on their weekly collection and end up with overflowing bins at Christmas.
“Residents whose collection day is Tuesday will have their garbage collected up to two hours earlier on Christmas Day, so they will need to make sure bins are put out the night before” said Ms Sayers.
The Shire’s Waste Management Facility at Moree and all village landfill sites, which are normally open on Tuesdays will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Ms Sayers urged people to be environmentally thoughtful about how waste is disposed over the festive season, “remember to use the yellow wheelie bin for recycling of cardboard and wrapping paper, cans and bottles” she said.
“Food waste and tree prunings can be put into the green wheelie bin; and e-waste (old mobiles, TVs) can be taken to the Waste Management Facility (free of charge) for recycling.”
