Magill Village Project
UPDATE
The Magill Village Partnership is a collaboration between the City of Burnside and Campbelltown City Council to investigate and identify the potential of the Magill Town Centre located around the intersection of Magill Road and St Bernards/Penfold Road east of the Adelaide CBD.
Both Councils have recognised that the area is rich in social, cultural heritage and presents a unique opportunity to create an exemplar ‘Village’ model that encompasses urban renewal streetscape improvements and urban landscape work. It can become a prototype for similar initiatives in other areas around Adelaide. A Magill Village Master Plan has been developed to achieve these improvements.
One feature of the Master Plan is the undergrounding of the power lines along Magill Road from Windsor Avenue to Saint Bernards Road.
Construction will be undertaken over two stages. Stage 1 involves the initial civil construction work to create the trenches and electrical pits. Stage 2 will involve installing cable, removing Stobie poles and connecting properties to the underground power lines.
What is happening?
The two Councils are working with SA Power Networks (SAPN) to underground the power lines along Magill road. SAPN and their civil contractor will be commencing the Stage 1 trenching and boring work as part of the project to underground the power lines on both sides of Magill Road from Vine Street to Windsor Avenue.
Work will also be undertaken on a small section of all side streets off Magill Road between Vine Street and Windsor Avenue.
The work will involve constructing trenches on the road way the extent of both sides of Magill Road and part of side streets, to house the underground powerlines. New electrical pits will be constructed in the road verge, with new trenches connecting the pits to the main powerline trench.
Work will also involve reinstating the kerb and road surface.
To minimise the impact of these construction works on residents and businesses, the trenching and reinstatement works will be progressively completed in approximately 18 m sections within 50 – 100 metre work zones.
When will the work happen?
Stage 1 work will commence in January and be completed in early June 2019.
Work will be undertaken along the northern side of Magill Road from Vine Street to Windsor Avenue between January and April; commencing on the southern side of Magill Road from April to June.

How will this affect me?
During these works access to properties, on-street car parking, footpaths and bus stops will be temporarily impacted as each section is undertaken progressively along Magill Road.
Access to properties will be impacted for approximately 1-2 days. SAPN’s civil contractor will provide advanced notice of work commencing adjacent your property, to enable businesses and residents to make alternative arrangements for access and car parking.
Detours will be in place on footpaths for pedestrians; and bus stops will temporarily be relocated as required.
There may also be short term lane closures on Magill Road and speed reductions will be in place on Magill Road adjacent the progressive work zones; please take note of changed traffic conditions when driving on Magill Road.
Should nightworks require to be undertaken, SAPN’s civil contractor will provide advanced notice of work commencing adjacent your property
Although unlikely, due to the complexity of this project there may be occasions when power will need to be turned off for the safety of workers.
What will happen next?
Stage 2, involving the installation of cable, Stobie pole removal and connecting properties to the underground power, will commence in mid-2019. This phase of work will involve impacts to power supply as properties are connected to the underground power lines.
