Hundreds of revellers are expected to start 2019 on the front foot by joining the New Year’s Resolution Fun Run on the Cairns Esplanade.

The fun run is part of the exciting Crystalbrook Collection New Year’s Eve program on the Cairns Esplanade, featuring two massive fireworks displays and a family concert with rides and activities.

A carnival atmosphere will line the 4km fun run course, with entertainment and surprises to help revellers party their way to the finish line.

“While this isn’t your regular New Year’s Eve party, we like to do things a little differently here in Cairns and embrace our active lifestyle,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “You don’t need to be super-fit – just willing to have some fun and finish 2018 on a high note.”

The course can be run or walked and participants are encouraged to dress up in neon and glow products to brighten up their run.

Registration is free and the event is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

“A lot of people make new year’s resolutions to be more active or to take up running,” Cr Manning said. “This fun run is a great way to kick-start things for the new year.”

The fun run starts at 7:30pm on New Year’s Eve at Fogarty Park and will travel along the Cairns Esplanade and back.

After crossing the finish line, participants can celebrate with refreshments. Medals will be presented to the first 200 runners to cross the finish line, with the top finisher to receive trophies.

The presentations will conclude with fireworks at 9pm.

Fogarty Park family concert

Fogarty Park will be filled with music, children’s activities, amusements and rides, food stalls.

Live music will start at 5.35pm with the Soul Song Choir, followed by the White Wizard Magic Show and successful Cairns singer-songwriter Greta Stanley.

Crazy Bron’s Kids’ Disco will get the youngsters dancing, before the evening rounds out with popular Cairns band Machine Machine.

“Given that we’re in the wet season, we’ve made all the activities and rides wet weather-friendly,” Cr Manning said. “So, if it’s raining on the night, throw on a rash vest and embrace our tropical summer.”

Two fireworks displays will light up the sky at 9pm and midnight.

Free carparking will be available at the Lake Street multi-storey carpark all day on New Year’s Eve.
