Work to ramp up on Abernethy Road widening project 18 December 2018

Work to create a safer, more accessible and less congested avenue into the Byford town centre will soon ramp up after a head contractor was appointed for the Abernethy Road widening project.

Designed to keep pace with a growing community, the project involves widening a 2.9km section of Abernethy Road between Kardan Boulevard and South Western Highway. It will help accommodate up to 16,800 vehicle movements into Byford each day by 2030 - around four times the number of vehicles on the road in 2012.

Construction company Wormall Civil has been appointed lead contractor for the project’s next phase.

Road works will begin in early February, after the installation of water mains along a 1.5km stretch of the road in early January. Traffic control will be in place during this time and residents are asked to take extra care when entering and exiting Abernethy Road between 7am and 5pm.

Weather conditions and operational changes may require these works to be rescheduled at short notice. Residents are encouraged to check the Shire’s website or contact the Project Manager on 9420 2968 for more information.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said residents would soon see the project take further shape with the start of above-ground work.

“To this point, much of the work has involved relocating underground utility services such as power, water, gas and communications infrastructure,” Cr Rich said.

“That was a lengthy and at times complex process involving a number of different service providers, however, this phase is close to completion. Site works will soon be far more visible and we’re expecting road works to begin at Kardan Boulevard in February 2019.”

The $19 million project is partly funded through contributions from the National Stronger Regions Fund, Main Roads WA and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

Cr Rich said widening Abernethy Road would not only make commuting safer for drivers and pedestrians, but would also help fuel Byford’s future growth.

“This project will reduce congestion considerably through the addition of roundabouts and new turning lanes, making it far easier for drivers to enter and exit Abernethy Road,” Cr Rich said.

“It will bring more people into the Byford town centre, supporting new and existing business and helping the area grow into a vibrant, modern community precinct.”
