A new basketball half court has been constructed at the Briggs Park Youth Precinct to complement the existing Byford Skate Park.

Opened in time for the school holidays, the court is the latest addition to the precinct, which includes a modern, purpose-built skate park and designated youth space.

The project was funded, designed, managed and constructed by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale with some speciality works completed by contractors.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the court would complement existing facilities and help grow the area into a focal point for local youths.

“Through consultation with those who use the precinct, it became clear that a basketball court would help to further activate the space and provide an additional activity for young people to enjoy,” Cr Rich said.

“The court looks fantastic and we’re excited that it is open for the start of the school holidays.

“We know that in communities where these kind of precincts and facilities don’t exist there are often higher rates of antisocial behaviour, vandalism and crime.

“So we see the wider Byford Youth Precinct as a really important investment in local youths and a place that helps them to be active and engaged with the wider community.”

As part of the Shire’s soon-to-be-released school holiday program, workshops with Basketball WA and Skateboarding WA are planned at the precinct in the New Year.

“This is something we hope will draw young people to the area and maybe encourage them to get involved in a new activity,” Cr Rich said.
