Libraries secure funding for our ‘Tech Savvy’ Seniors

Western Downs Libraries have received the ‘Tech Savvy for Seniors’ grant from Telstra and the State Library of Queensland for the fourth year in a row.

Since 2016 Western Downs Libraries have used the Tech Savvy for Seniors grant to provide free digital training for senior residents across the Western Downs.

In previous years our seniors have learnt the basic ‘tech savvy’ skills as well as using more complex apps including social media, online shopping, online banking, emailing and much more.

Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire is excited to be offering bigger and better things for our seniors in 2019.

“We’ve had such great feedback about these sessions and our seniors are really keen to learn new skills and take this opportunity to learn how to easily connect and stay connected to their family and friends,” she said.

“A lot of residents didn’t grow up in the digital world we live in now, so it’s really great that we offer these specific free programs to our seniors.

“This just continues to show that our region really is the perfect place to live, work and play and we’re proud to be supporting our residents of all ages.”

Library Services Delivery Supervisor Shirley Venuto has received very positive feedback for the last three years on these sessions.

“Our participants have been very grateful for these opportunities and are really looking forward to more of these days at the library,” she said.

“One of our seniors, Heather, participated in these sessions and is now very confident to do all of her banking online which is really great to see.”
