Seven graduating Year 12 students can stay closer to their families and community while they study through the Western Downs Regional Council Community Spirit Bursary.

The Bursary was given to one graduating student from each of the seven high schools in the Western Downs during their presentation evenings.

The award brings students back home and keeps them connected to their communities by offering paid work experience at Western Downs Regional Council during their University holidays.

This allows the students to focus on their work during the semester knowing they have a job when they return home.

Council Spokesperson for Finance and Corporate Services Councillor Ian Rasmussen said the recipients had excelled both inside and outside the classroom.

“We have some terrific young people in our region who have dedicated a lot of time to their schools but also to their own communities,” he said.

“This award is a great opportunity for these young men and women to come home and gain work experience while they study at University.”

Each student was chosen by their Principal and has excelled in the classroom, been involved in the community and was also active in their school.

Claudia Nothdurft from Our Lady of the Southern Cross College was one of this year’s recipients.

Claudia was given the award for her commitment to her studies and her community.

The Dalby student has been a volunteer for the Western Downs Libraries Fun Palaces, the Lions Club of Dalby and regularly fundraises for Relay for Life and the Dalby Dolphins Swimming Club.

She said she was thrilled to be awarded the Bursary because of the opportunities it would give her and also be able come back home to her family and a job during University breaks.

“Working for Council is a great way to get to become more involved in our community and sets you up for future work,” she said.

“I want to go to University next year and knowing you have paid work in your breaks is a stress reliever.”
