Upgrade for Albany Highway

Roadworks to upgrade an ageing section of Albany Highway will begin on Monday but businesses along the work zone will remain open and accessible.

The City of Albany is resurfacing 1.2km of the worn four-lane highway between Macedon Street and Barker Road with works expected to finish in late March. Executive Director of Infrastructure and Environment Matthew Thomson said the works would not close the highway and one lane would remain open on the side under reconstruction.

“We need to take advantage of the warm, dry months to get the work done with as little impact on the community as possible,” he said.

“In planning this project our priority has been to maintain traffic flow at reduced speeds and ensure businesses along the highway are still accessible.

“Access to some side streets off Albany Highway will need to be closed during the works, so we ask motorists to observe the traffic management and take care when travelling through the site, or use alternative routes if they can.”

Mr Thomson said crews had recently completed pavement repairs and patching in preparation for the road reseal. “We’ll remove the existing surface using a large profiling machine before we lay a new bitumen seal, which will then be followed by two layers of asphalt,” he said. “Sections of kerbing as well as drainage pits and grates will also be replaced.”
