Accessing Yanchep Beach this summer will now be easier for people living with a disability, or impaired mobility with the launch of the City of Wanneroo’s second beach wheelchair.

The Sandcruiser is a purpose built beach wheelchair designed to enable users to move easily across beach sand and into the water with the support of a carer. To ensure safety, the chair is void of electrical components meaning that users need to be accompanied by someone who is able to push the chair during use.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts welcomed the addition of another beach wheelchair to the City’s service offering.

“More than 4 million Australians live with a disability. As a City, we are committed to ensuring that our beaches, facilities and open spaces are accessible and can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors.

“The addition of the Sandcruiser complements the Beach Trekker wheelchair already available at Quinns Beach, and I encourage residents, visitors and service providers to make the most of the fantastic opportunity they provide to experience our wonderful beaches this summer”.

“I would also like to thank Yanchep and Quinns Mindarie surf lifesaving clubs for their continued support in delivering this important community service”.

The beach wheelchairs are only available during the times that Quinns and Yanchep beaches are patrolled by Surf Lifesaving WA or the local surf clubs; 8am to 4pm Saturdays and Sundays; 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday at Yanchep Beach; and 8am - 1pm Monday to Friday at Quinns Beach.

The chairs are free to book at either location. For more information, including how to book the chairs, please visit wanneroo.wa.gov.au/beachwheelchairs.

The arrival of the Sandcruiser beach wheelchair at Yanchep Beach is an outcome of the City’s latest Access and Inclusion Plan, which was developed in close collaboration with the City of Wanneroo community and local service providers.
