The STS Leeuwin II, Australia’s 2nd tallest ship, returns to Albany on 13th January 2 for a magnificent morning of ocean sailing adventure aboard the 1850’s style barquentine ship.
The 3-hour adventure sail will see guests taking the helm and hauling sails aloft in the sheltered waters of King George Sound, reminiscent of Albany’s celebrated history as the first settlement in Western Australia.
For ‘landlubbers’ the Amazing South Coast will play host to an evening of entertainment aboard the Leeuwin in Albany on Monday, 14th January with the exclusive ‘Shanty Me Timbers’ Event including handcrafted beer, delectable woodfired treats and maritime entertainment by the renowned Albany Shantymen.
Craft beer enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet Matty Wilson, master brewer at Wilson Brewing Company, a family-owned brewery based in Albany that is taking the craft beer scene in WA by storm. In just 3 years, Wilson’s have become an amazing success story with distribution to over 100 venues across Western Australia and plans to expand the brewery even further as production aims to keep up with demand.
Core beers include the Rough Seas Pale Ale, Lost Sailor Dark Ale and the newest edition – the Dirty Oar. Wilson’s have built a reputation for creating seasonal brews celebrating the best, local South Coast produce and for the ‘Shanty Me Timbers’ event, an exclusive brew will be available on the evening. ‘Raisin The Sails’ – a tasty Rum & Raisin Porter, will be served, together with a masterclass in ‘Pouring The Perfect Pint’ by Matty Wilson.
Delighting guests on the night with a repertoire of maritime sea shanty’s, the Albany Shantymen are a rowdy bunch who love to sing loud and hard, like the sailors of old.
Formed by ginger-bearded English immigrant Gary “Grizz” Greenwald a few years ago, the Albany Shantymen’s ranks now total 16 and will be a perfect accompaniment for visitors as they explore the decks of the Leeuwin, whilst feasting on delectable woodfired treats from the Woodfired Catering Co.
The ‘Shanty Me Timbers’ Event on 14th January is strictly an 18+ event.
Tickets are $98 per person, and can be purchased from Albany Visitor Centre on (08) 6820 3700 or online at www.theamazingsouthcoast.com/shanty-me-timbers
