The Town’s past and future will come together as the Pensioner Guard Cottage and residence are renovated and the Town welcomes its new Child Health Clinic.
Honouring its cultural and historical significance, the Pensioner Guard Cottage, Bassendean’s oldest building still standing, will be thoughtfully restored, along with the historical aspects of the residence, to provide a new community space.
As part of the restoration works, funded by a Lotterywest Grant, a new Child Health Clinic will be constructed at the rear of the residence. After extensive consultation with key heritage stakeholders, it was agreed that the primary use of the residence will be for historical displays and to tell the many stories about the significance of 1 Surrey St. As a result, the overall design will enable regular playgroup sessions, community meetings and other compatible purposes.
The Town is seeking tenders in the first half of 2019, with construction works scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.
The grant funding has allowed the Town to restore and preserve an important part of the Town’s history whilst providing a new community space.
