Development Approved for Kmart and Bunnings in Warragul

Published on 10 January 2019

Kmart and a full-line Bunnings are officially headed for Warragul following approval of a planning application for the 25,240 square metre retail precinct development.

The retail precinct, located on the corner of Queen Street and Hazel Drive, will also include a Kmart Tyre and Auto and six smaller retail spaces – tenants yet to be determined. Plans also include provisions for 627 car parking spaces.

The application was approved by Council’s planning department under the relevant delegation following the successful rezoning of the land by the Victorian Government earlier in August 2018. A permit has been issued to the developer, Troon Group Pty Ltd.

The development aims to provide more diverse shopping options for the local community that complement existing retailers in the Warragul CBD area and surrounds.

Construction will soon commence with completion expected towards the end of 2019.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Mayor Cr Danny Goss

“This is great news for local job seekers with the creation of over 260 direct full-time jobs and even more during the construction phase. With growth comes opportunity and we look forward to bringing more retail offerings and additional employment to Baw Baw Shire.”

“Residents have been asking for these large-scale retail outlets for some time – Council has delivered on that.”

Quotes attributable to Central Ward Cr Joe Gauci

“Almost 3,000 respondents took part in an online poll last January, which saw overwhelming support – at 96.9 per cent – in favour of a large-scale retail precinct in Warragul. We’ve listened to our community, and in February committed to this process by advocating to the State Minister for Planning for the necessary rezoning of this piece land.”

“It’s fantastic to see this development finally get over the line and thank everyone involved for their hard work and collaboration. We now look forward to progress commencing on site.”

Quotes attributable to Director Planning and Development Yasmin Woods

“As one of Victoria’s fastest growing regions, it’s exciting to have two iconic retail businesses coming to Baw Baw Shire. Bunnings, Kmart and other businesses will not only provide our communities with a wider range of products, but also a range of employment opportunities that will help keep them here rather than having to commute to other regions.”

Quotes attributable to Bunnings Area Manager Kianne Namdarian

“We have been a part of the Warragul local community for over five years and are looking forward to bringing a bigger warehouse which will be almost double the size of our current Warragul store.”

“We’ll also be recruiting for new team members to join our current team who will transfer to the new warehouse once it has been constructed. We will update the Warragul community as the development progresses.”
