Advocates required for disability reference group
City of Armadale 10 Jan 2019

The City of Armadale's Disability Access and Inclusion Reference Group is seeking community minded advocates to help advocate for improved, more accessible services and facilities for residents living with a disability in the City of Armadale.

The reference group works alongside the City and the community to identify local needs, to resolve long term accessibility issues and to discuss strategies that are outlined in the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP).

City of Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP said the DAIP was designed to allow the City to plan and implement improvements to access and inclusion across a number of outcome areas. These include services and events, buildings and facilities, information, quality of service, complaints, consultation processes and employment.

“Access and inclusion is about ensuring that all public services, facilities and information are available to all community members, including those living with a disability, so that they have the opportunity, and choice to participate in all aspects of community life.”

“Meaningful access and inclusion will involve a community-wide shift in attitudes, and each member of the reference group will assist with informing the City to remain proactive in its approach to continually improving disability services.”

The reference group will include a City Councillor and City of Armadale Officers, with the majority of representation coming from community organisations and community members who live with disability, have family members living with disability or are interested in access and inclusion.

“The group aims to provide a proactive platform for monitoring and evaluating the City's DAIP and advise on strategies for effective consultation and collaboration with the community. The reference group will meet quarterly,” added Mayor Zelones.

The City is currently inviting interested and proactive community members to join the reference group.
