East Gippsland Shire Council has recently upgraded the Bemm River Transfer Station and is currently open daily from 8am to 4pm.
Work included road sealing, new fences and extra bays for the disposal bins for a total project cost of $223,275.
Council has also employed a site operator. From the end of January, waste disposal will only be available during staffed hours and standard fees will apply.
Manager Waste and Resource Recovery Kartik Venkatraman said the changes make Bemm River Transfer Station consistent and with other transfer stations in the shire.
“These upgrades are part of the Waste Facilities and Disposal Strategy. Staffing the site will ensure people are only disposing of items that can be accepted at transfer stations,” Mr Venkatraman said.
“The community is also now able to recycle, meaning fewer recyclable items will end up in landfill.”
The new opening hours (peak season), 11am to 1pm daily, will come into effect at the end of January. All changes to the transfer station were set after consultation with the community.
