As the Capricorn Coast Region continues to see major growth both economically and in population size, Council has reconfirmed its commitment to proceed with a name change and formal reclassification of Livingstone Shire to a Regional Council.
An online community consultation is going live tomorrow using Council’s Get Involved engagement platform to inform the community of the intention to change the name and give people an opportunity to have their say.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said our region is now home to over 37,000 residents and the rebranding would offer greater opportunity to grow tourism, job creation, business growth and attract more private sector investment in the region while also raising Council’s profile.
“The push for a name change first came in 2014 when the Capricorn Coast Business and Tourism (CCBT) group approached Council stressing the importance of a name change for our Local Government area,” Cr Ludwig said.
“The CCBT, who at the time had over 150 business members, put forward a well-considered case that a name change and rebranding from Livingstone Shire to the Capricorn Coast Region would be as a key driver for the future economic development of our region.
“It was pointed out at the time that very few people outside this region have any idea where Livingstone Shire is situated geographically that it is one of Queensland’s premier coastal destination for both business and tourism investment.
“For years we have been marketing our area as the Capricorn Coast region, so it makes sense for the local government to have the same name as the region.
“With Council’s outstanding successes in securing more than $130 million of State and Federal funding to transform our foreshores and rebuild our regional economy, it is both timely and logical to now consider the name change to put the Capricorn Coast Region on the national and international tourism and investment map.
If there is general community support to rebranding would be transitioned cost effectively over time as part of the organic process of replacing and updating items as part of their natural life.
