Learn and care for our environment

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone encouraged residents to take advantage of Council’s free environmental workshops and tours.    “The workshops will give you tips for your garden and home, while the tours will showcase the diversity and interesting facts about our local environment,” Mayor Carbone said.    “For those who like to get their hands dirty and directly help our environment, then I recommend you get involved with the dedicated volunteers of the Flora Park or Sartor Bushcare groups.    “There is no better feeling than meeting like-minded people and making a positive contribution to our community by preserving our wonderful natural bushland areas.”

Natural Fertilisers and Pest Control workshop  Saturday 2 February at Nalawala Sustainability Hub, 9am-12pm.  Residents can learn about taking care of their garden the natural way with less reliance on chemicals. This workshop will teach you about the different natural fertilisers and pest control you can make or purchase. 

Weed Identification workshop  Saturday 9 February at Nalawala Sustainability Hub, 9am-12pm.  Did you know that gardens are the greatest source of bushland weeds? Residents can learn what plants in their garden can spread to our bushland reserves, how they spread and how they can prevent this from happening. Residents will also receive free native plants for their garden.    Community Nursery Open Day Saturday 9 February at Nalawala Sustainability Hub, 9am-12pm.  Come and be involved with a community group of likeminded residents. The Community Nursery offers volunteers a variety of experiences including plant identification, using different propagation methods, nursery maintenance and seed collecting.  

Breakfast with the birds Saturday 23 February at Irelands Bridge Reserve, 7:30am-11:30am.  Join Andrew Patrick from Zest for Birds on a walk and talk as he highlights the variety of local birdlife. Brunch will be provided.

The Flora Park Bushcare Group Saturday 16 February, Christie Street, Prairiewood, 9am-12pm.  This group was established in 1991 and are at a stage where native regeneration rather than weed removal is the focus. Come join the group to help maintain this area and continue its regeneration to help it looking great. Tasks include hand weeding, track maintenance, seed collecting and monitoring.     Sartor Reserve Regeneration Group Saturday 23 February at Sartor Crescent, 9am-12pm.  The Sartor Reserve group was set up in 2015 by a group of concerned bush regeneration contractors who believe that this area has enormous potential. Come join likeminded people to help make this area gleam. Tasks include hand weeding, plant identification, seed collecting and monitoring.
