Lamingtons, meat pies, a snag on the barbecue, a game of cricket or day at the beach, and celebrating our communities … Australia Day has arrived.
East Gippsland Shire Council Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell is encouraging residents and visitors to support local Australia Day community events this Saturday January 26 and “celebrate what’s great about your town, community and being an Aussie”.
“It is wonderful to be Australian. To be able to share the company of fellow Australians and to enjoy what this great country offers us is one of the great aspects of community celebrations on Australia Day,” Cr O’Connell said.
“Council is proud to support local groups in holding their January 26 celebrations (see list below) and I thank those volunteers for ensuring these events are held for all community members.”
On Saturday morning at the Corporate Centre in Bairnsdale the Mayor will have the honour of conferring 18 candidates as new Australian citizens. The candidates hail from Iran, France, Egypt, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States of America, Poland, the Philippines and India.
“This will not only be a proud day for those individuals and their families, but also for our community as these new Australians have not only chosen to call Australia home but will contribute to making East Gippsland great,” Cr O’Connell said.
The citizenship ceremony will be livestreamed on Council’s YouTube channel ‘EastGippyTV’ at 11am.
Council will announce its East Gippsland Australia Day Awards recipients on Tuesday, January 22, at the Corporate Centre. This ceremony will also be livestreamed from 10.30am.
