Council launches Phases 3-8 of the Livingstone Coastal Hazards Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) Project

Funded by the Department of Environment and Science and administered by the Local Government Association of Queensland under the QCoast2100 programme, the project will focus on Phases 3-8 of the CHAS.

Mayor Bill Ludwig said Council has already completed background planning and scoping through Phases 1 and 2 of the CHAS project, after receiving funding from the State Government’s QCoast2100 program in 2016.

“Council is undertaking this project to better understand the risks posed by coastal hazards that affect our coastline today, as well as those that will affect it in the future. It is important for us to understand how coastal hazards could affect our community, environment, cultural values, and assets, so that we can be prepared and make informed decisions on what short and long-term actions should be taken to manage the risks.”

Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton said Council is also seeking input from residents as part of the preparation for Phase 3 via a community survey which is released on Council’s online engagement platform, Get Involved.

“Stakeholder and community input is vitally important to the success of the project and will help shape and influence the outcomes of the CHAS, particularly community values and preferred adaptation options,” Cr Hutton said.

“While the Livingstone Coast stretches for some 300 kilometres, Council’s primary focus is on approximately 80 kilometres of coastline from Fishing Creek at the northern end of Farnborough Beach to the Fitzroy River and the islands that are adjacent to this coastline.

“The CHAS will provide Council and the community high quality information that will enable well-considered, timely and effective decisions about how to respond to coastal hazard risks.”
