Responsible Fishing

In the world of smart phones, Instagram and so many other distractions, it’s always good to see people having a break from technology and enjoying the outdoors.  Residents and visitors to the Town of Bassendean are indeed fortunate to be able to enjoy 7km of riverfront inhabited by a range of water birds.  The Town’s River Parks Committee is focused on preserving this rich natural environment for future generations and have embarked on an education program to minimise human impacts on nature.  One of the initiatives is aimed at reducing the harm caused to birds and turtles by fishing.

It is best not to feed wildlife as it can lead them to mistake bait for food and become hooked or entangled.  If you fish, cast away from birds and if you do accidentally hook a bird do not cut the line but reel it in carefully.  Protect your eyes with glasses and throw a towel or shirt over the bird who will normally calm down when its eyes are covered.  Grab hold of the beak and fold the wings.  Try to find a second person to help as you untangle any line from the bird. Also the best way to remove a protruding hook is to cut it in half with pliers. Afterwards, if the bird looks OK, place it on the ground and release it gently.  If you need assistance at anytime call the Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055 which is manned 7 days per week.

It is also helpful to pick up any discarded line and bait bags that you might find, and carefully dispose of them into the nearest bin.  The Town of Bassendean will be installing signs along the riverfront over coming weeks that will provide information aimed at preserving our wildlife.
