Council is providing incentive to shop locally this Christmas, by implementing 30 days of free on-street parking in the CBD from Monday 17 December to Friday 18 January.
The decision was passed by Council at its 1st Ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday 11 December and will bring a welcome boost to trading in the CBD over the Christmas/New Year period.
Acting Lord Mayor Andrew Arthur was positive that CBD traders would welcome the move. “This is a positive contribution that not only traders, but the whole community will benefit from.”
“We want to encourage the community to come into the CBD over the festive period, to shop locally and to show their support for local businesses.”
“By extending free on-street parking in the CBD through to early January, we will hopefully see more people coming into the city over the quieter post-Christmas period too” added the Acting Lord Mayor.
Council will be campaigning over the coming weeks to ensure that the community are aware of the changes and that the CBD is well and truly ‘open for business’ this Christmas/New Year period.
Council patrols of the free on-street parking zones will continue during the 30 day period to ensure availability of parking and turn-over of spaces in compliance with the relevant parking zone time limits.
