Council gives the green light on rainbow garden

The Esplanade is about to get a whole lot brighter with Council supporting the installation of a rainbow garden at The Esplanade and Daly Street roundabout at its Ordinary Council Meeting held this evening. The garden will complement the popular rainbow crossing that exists at the Knuckey Street and Smith Street intersection.

“I am proud to be a part of a Council that supports initiatives such as the rainbow garden,” said Acting Lord Mayor Andrew Arthur.

“The garden will provide a welcoming and colourful entrance to The Esplanade via Daly Street while, importantly, also representing the diversity and uniqueness that exists in our great city

“The rainbow garden will add an extra element of vibrancy and flare to what is an already well-used gateway to The Esplanade and Darwin CBD,” said the Acting Lord Mayor.

The garden will be decked out by Darwin Pride with an array of colourful plants and flowers and maintained by Council. Installation is expected to commence in January 2019.

The idea for a rainbow garden was put to Council by Darwin Pride as a suggestion as part of Darwin Pride Festival celebrations. The rainbow garden was originally proposed for the Daly Street and Smith Street roundabout, however, was deemed to be more suitable at The Esplanade intersection.

The Esplanade and Daly Street roundabout location was assessed as the preferred site due to its existing suitable irrigation system, good and safe access for viewing and optimal sunlight for growing flowering and colourful plants.
