Local school crowned lunchbox legends

Lithgow primary school students are paving the way towards more environmentally friendly lunches, thanks to a Council program aimed at reducing the amount of packaging in school students’ lunchboxes

In an effort to reduce waste ending up as playground litter or going to landfill, Lithgow City Council has been targeting school lunchbox packaging as part of their annual waste education program.  

The program, delivered in Term 4 2018, involved teachers monitoring and recording the number and types of packaging in student lunchboxes over an eight week period. 

Six schools participated in the program, with Portland Central demonstrating the most improvement and winning a worm farm and a $200 voucher. All participating schools also received a worm farm to assist their ongoing efforts towards waste reduction and students at Cullen Bullen Public School received additional prizes for being the most improved class.

Lithgow Mayor Ray Thompson said today “We are thrilled the local teachers and students worked so hard to maintain the focus on reducing packaging and waste. Congratulations to all the primary schools involved in the program, you should all be extremely proud of your environmental achievements.”
