Become a Drain Detective
Bayside City Council 22 Jan 2019

Council and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) are encouraging citizen scientists to help monitor water quality at bay beaches, including Sandringham.

Visitors to Sandringham beach can help the EPA gather data to understand and manage pollution by taking a photo of water flowing from the stormwater drain in front of Sandringham Life Saving Club.

Sensors are located in the drain pipes which test for chemicals in the water to help determine where stormwater is coming from.

Each year the sensors will be moved to a different beach, giving the EPA more data than their weekly monitoring program currently allows.

Look out for the Drain Detectives signs on Sandringham beach and foreshore.

The program is funded by the Victorian Government Port Phillip Bay Fund, and is a collaboration between Bayside, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula councils, EPA Victoria, Port Phillip EcoCentre and Monash University.
