Celebrating Australia Day in the Byron Shire

Published on 22 January 2019

Byron Shire Council will be celebrating the contribution and achievements of local residents at the Australia Day Awards presentation which will be held at 5:30pm on Friday 25 January at the Cavanbah Centre at Byron Bay.

The awards are Council’s way of recognising the amazing work of dedicated people who live in the Shire who give tirelessly to the community.

“The Community Awards are a very small way for Council to say thank you and every year I am humbled by what people do for their community so it’s a great honour to be able to publicly honour their achievements,” Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson said.

This year Council will present awards in seven categories:

Citizen of the Year Senior Citizen of the Year Volunteer of the Year Community Event of the Year Sportsperson of the Year Creative Artist of the Year Environmental Project of the Year

Byron Shire’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2019 is Joel Pilgrim, an Occupational Therapist who is well-known for his work in mental health.  He is the founder and CEO of the Waves of Wellness Foundation, which uses surf-based therapy intervention to help people improve their mental health.

On 26 January there will be community events in towns and villages in the Byron Shire including Byron Bay, Ocean Shores, Bangalow and Brunswick Heads.

Information about the Byron Shire Australia Day Awards and the times and locations of Australia Day community events are on Council’s website www.byron.nsw.gov.au/Community/Whats-on-in-Byron-Shire/Australia-Day-2019-Community-Events.
