Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller welcomed a $13 million grant from the Western Parkland City Liveability Program for a Community and Recreational Hub in Lurnea.

The grant, announced today by Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge and NSW Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayers will fund most of a $16.2 million redevelopment of Philips Park to create outstanding new sporting and recreational facilities as well as a new community hub including a café, function rooms and after-school care.

Mayor Waller expressed her desire for Phillips Park to become a focal point for community life with an upgrade including multi-purpose facilities to connect residents and families of Lurnea with attractive and enjoyable recreation spaces.

“This will help make Lurnea a liveable, vibrant and healthy village and will stimulate investor confidence into the area,” Mayor Waller said.

“We want to see Phillips Park become the beating heart of Lurnea where people from all backgrounds and their families come to meet, socialise, play sport and relax.”

The upgrade of Phillips Park will include:

*           A social enterprise café;

*           A multi-purpose community centre to support playgroups, out-of-school-hours activities, community group meetings and informal social activities;

*           Soccer fields, a cricket oval and a half multi-court area for basketball and netball facilities;

*           An outdoor exercise park;

*           A playground;

*           Walking tracks; and

*           Passive recreation areas including picnic shelters.

“This is a great opportunity to provide much-needed investment in Lurnea,” Mayor Waller said.

“This will help to address the social, economic and recreational needs of the community and stimulate confidence into the area.

“Phillips Park is exactly the sort of project the three levels of government had in mind when they created the Liveability Program as part of the ground-breaking Western Sydney City Deal signed by Federal, State and eight Local governments in March last year.

“As our communities grow we need to continue to invest to make sure our residents have access to great facilities that improve their quality of life.

“Councils are committing $50 million to the eight Liveability Programs. Investment and energy from all three tiers of government make great places and Council is very pleased with this commitment.”

Council is finalising designs and tender documents with construction planned to commence this year.
