The contributions and achievements of many outstanding residents have been recognised, with 30 nominations received for the 2019 Burdekin Shire Australia Day Awards.

The awards include Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year, Junior and Senior Cultural Awards, Junior and Senior Sportsperson Awards, Sportsperson with a Disability, Sports Administrator Award, Lifetime Contribution Award, Senior Environment Award and Community Event of the Year.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the awards were the Burdekin’s way of acknowledging the recipients for their remarkable contributions to our community.

“The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate the many outstanding Burdekin residents who work tirelessly to make the region a better place to live,” she said.

“One of the Burdekin’s biggest assets is the volunteer mindset and hard work of many people in our community- a strength that is not present in all regional towns. On Friday we will recognise some of these local residents who contribute to the high quality of life in our district.”

Cr McLaughlin invited residents to attend the Shire’s Australia Day celebrations at the Burdekin Theatre on Friday 25 January, which will include performances by the Burdekin Singers and Theatre Company, Burdekin Brass Band, Home Hill Choral Society, Perform Music Studios, Rhythm Edge Dance Studios and Amaia Licciardello.

“There will also be a naturalisation ceremony and key note speech by well-known weather reporter and Queensland Media Award winner Jenny Woodward, as well as the cutting of the Australia Day cake,” she said.

“I encourage the entire community to join in our Shire’s Australia Day event and celebrate all that is great about our nation, as well as welcome the Burdekin’s newest Australian citizen to our community.”

The 2019 Burdekin Australia Day Awards Evening will be held at 7pm on Friday 25 January at the Burdekin Theatre. Following the formal awards ceremony, entertainment will be provided by Megan Law and the Burdekin Theatre bar will be open.

Tickets are only $3 and can be purchased online at www.burdekintheatre.com.au or from the Burdekin Theatre.
