Youth Development program kicks into gear.
The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has appointed two dedicated Youth Development Officers as part of a renewed focus on helping local young people lead healthier, more engaged lifestyles.
Working within the Shire’s Community Development Team, the officers will host a range of workshops, programs and activities designed to equip young people aged 12 to 18 with important life skills.
They will be based at the Shire’s Mundijong office, but will spend much of their time interacting with young people at places like the Briggs Park Youth Precinct and skate parks.
Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the introduction of Youth Development Officers was part of a wider commitment towards helping young people have a voice in the community, and generally lead healthier, more connected lifestyles.
“Our population aged 12 to 24 is expected to double to over 10,000 in the next decade and it’s important we cater for growth by providing ways young people can stay connected with their community, develop new skills, and reach out for support should they need it,” Cr Rich said.
“The Youth Development Officers will be a very visible presence around the Shire, working directly with young people and helping them stay active and involved with the community.”
Until recently, youth services were delivered by the Serpentine Jarrahdale YMCA. However, a desire to more directly engage with young people in the community prompted the shire to review youth support services.
“It’s important we’re able to provide these services in the most effective and efficient way possible, and in a way that lets us form better relationships with young people in our community ,” Cr Rich said.
“The best way to do that is to provide youth services directly, while still working closely with partner agencies, departments and service providers.”
The Shire’s Term One Youth Program includes skate sessions running from February to April, Youth Advisory Council meetings at the Briggs Park Youth Precinct and Drop-in sessions also at Briggs Park.
