Shake your pom poms on Australia Day

Get ready to shake your pompoms and sparkle with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ official cheer squad, The Sapphires, at Council’s 2019 Australia Day event!

Lead Sapphire, Tracy Reid, said they will run three dance clinics and each one, running for 30 minutes, will have a different style.

“We’ll have one clinic to showcase traditional cheerleading style, another all about hip hop and the last will be funk,” Ms Reid said.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to try something new while having some fun and, who knows, you might surprise yourself!”

Residents will also be able to play rugby league with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at the event, with players there to kick goals, pass the ball and run you through some drills.

Mayor Khal Asfour said there’s nothing better than seeing so many proud residents displaying their patriotism on Australia Day, with thousands attending Council’s events over the years dressed in the national colours.

“I believe no one celebrates Australia Day quite as powerfully as Canterbury-Bankstown,” he said.

“We are one of the most diverse cities in the country; a vibrant mosaic of many different nationalities, customs, traditions, languages and religions.

“Celebrating Australia Day means something different to every one of our residents. Whether you were born here, recently settled here, or been living here for a little while now, we’re all so lucky to call this country home.”

Council’s Australia Day event will be held at Belmore Oval on Saturday 26 February (6-9.30pm). It will end with two big bangs – the Harbour Bridge fireworks display on the big screen (9pm), and then Council’s own magical fireworks display (9.20pm).
