Council receives boost for tourism, public safety

Broken Hill City Council received separate donations from the State Government today to light up the city's heritage buildings and parks, and improve security in public areas.
Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries, today announced a $750,000 grant from the Growing Local Economies Fund to promote the city’s iconic public buildings and share the stories behind Broken Hill as Australia’s First Heritage Listed City through the ‘Australia’s Heritage Perfectly Highlighted’ project.
“This particular project will activate city spaces in a 3D ‘Vivid’ style interpretation and bring to life the CBD and other iconic buildings in a festival of light, pictures, movement and sound,” Kevin Humphries said.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said the project is one of seven new projects that will receive Growing Local Economies Fund grants this month, to kick-start or reignite regional NSW economies.
“I congratulate the Broken Hill City Council on this funding win and look forward to seeing how this funding will bring benefits for local contractors in the short term and the growth it will provide businesses in the region in the long-term,” Mr Barilaro said.
Council also received $160,000 toward its smart lighting initiative through the fourth round of the $10 million NSW Community Safety Fund, which invests in innovative projects to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
Council will match that amount dollar-for-dollar to upgrade existing lighting and provide new solar street lighting around the Council Administrative Centre, Sturt and Patton Parks, and the airport.
Mayor Darriea Turley said both funding announcements would result in significant improvements to the city’s appearance.
"We're extremely grateful for the financial support announced by the Government today," said Mayor Turley.
"The illumination of the Town Hall Facade during the Heritage Festival showed what an amazing impact lighting projects can have on our historic buildings.
"It will be great for locals and tourists alike to see other lighting initiatives rolled out around the city to liven up our city streets.
"Meanwhile the smart lighting funding will support our efforts to improve lighting and CCTV in our parks and public areas, and hopefully prevent vandalism and ensure locals feel safer in their own community.
