It will be fun in the sun this Australia Day with a pool party at the Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool.

Starting at 8:30am Saturday, Council will host the Australian citizenship ceremony, followed by fun and games. This year marks 70 years since Australian citizenship was introduced into law.

The celebrations will include face painting, balloon animals, inflatable races, live music and some great food, including a sausage sizzle.

“We’re doing things a little differently this year. Having a pool party is a great way to cool off and celebrate being Australian,” said Mayor Liz Schmidt.

“We will also welcome our newest Australia citizens at the citizenship ceremony. It’s going to be a huge day, so bring your picnic blanket, swimmers and inflatable flamingos or beds for some Aussie fun.”

Breaking from tradition, Council has followed the Australian of the Year Awards and other Councils by hosting the Australia Day awards ceremony the night before on 25 January.

“We’ve decided to hold the Awards the night before to provide a formal event separate from the informal pool party on the 26th. It also allows the community to attend the awards without conflict with the Goldfield Ashes.”

The awards acknowledge and reward outstanding individuals, organisations and groups who are committed to improving our region’s lifestyle.

“I want to encourage the community to attend the awards to acknowledge and support our nominees.”

The ceremony will be held at the World Theatre from 7pm on Friday night and will include two guest speakers, Australia Day Ambassador Carmel Crouch and special guest Michael Kasprowicz. This event is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

Carmel Crouch is a distinguished business woman and community leader known for her work in building capacity and empowering individuals and communities towards independence.

Local cricket clubs are encouraged to come and hear Michael Kasprowicz’s unique experiences.  Michael played 83 internationally matches and retired from first class cricket in 2007-2008 after playing 115 matches and taking 505 wickets.
