It's all about community

Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) is much more than its name suggests – providing inclusive, fun and safe activities for local people with disability, carers, family and friends.

The not-for-profit organisation was today named Canterbury-Bankstown’s Organisation of the Year for 2019, for its work in the local community.  RSAC has served Canterbury-Bankstown for in excess of 30 years, with more than 600 people with disability regularly participating in:

President Bob Beer, who has been involved with the RSAC for more than 20 years, said the club’s efforts really are a community affair.

"Our volunteers, including parents, carers and community members, organise and run our fundraisers, so we’re able to offer all that we do," he said.​

"The outcomes we’ve seen through our programs have been amazing. We have seen attendees enhance their social skills, improve their communication, learn to work in teams and really be able to do their own thing.

"Most special of all is seeing them meet people with similar interests, forming friendships and develop self-confidence."

Mayor Khal Asfour thanked the RSAC for its generous and long-standing commitment to the local community.

"More than 23,100 residents – 6.7 per cent of the City’s population – need assistance in their day-to-day lives due to disability, including my own daughter," he said.

"Organisations, like the RSAC, really have a special place in my heart because the service, support and happiness they provide really does change lives.

"All our residents should be able to enjoy getting active, so I’m very thankful the RSAC makes this happen."
