Thousands of residents flocked to the City of Canterbury Bankstown’s inaugural Twilight Australia Day event at Belmore Oval tonight.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the twilight event was a huge success, with thousands of people in attendance.

“When we asked our community what events they would like Council to deliver for Australia Day, an overwhelming 91 per cent said they would consider attending a night, so that’s what we delivered,” he said.

“It was great to see so many people enjoy our events and embrace the spirit of the day. It is events like these that show how our community comes together to celebrate.”

Mayor Asfour said the community particularly enjoyed the laid-back family vibe.

“The Voice 2017 semi-finalist, Spencer Jones, was a big hit, along with the Australian Blues Brothers Show,” he said.

“Kids also enjoyed the performance by Splash Dance and loved the cheerleading lessons with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs cheer squad.”

After a program full of fun and entertaining activities, residents finished the night with a bang.

“Nothing topped our spectacular fireworks display, which lit up the night sky. It was a great finale,” Mayor Asfour said.
