New twist for Council’s pet responsibility campaign

Cessnock City Council have launched a new video on social media aimed at getting residents in the Cessnock Local Government Area to think about keeping their backyard secure.

The video starts out using a bit of humour but ends with a twist. The message is simple ‘Make sure your yard is secure, shut your gate and keep your mate safe’.The video is the newest addition to the Council’s responsible pet ownership campaign, ‘with love comes responsibility’ that was launched last year. The campaign focuses on educating residents to enable them to be better pet owners.  To view the video visit https://youtu.be/xgDBjrpPprk

Council’s Ranger Team Leader Kurt Livens said it’s hoped the video will get residents talking and thinking about their own backyards.

“Unfortunately all too often when a dog escapes consequences follow. Your mate might get hit by a car or force a driver to swerve off the road and end up injured in an accident. There’s been other incidents where dogs have attacked residents or their neighbour’s pets.”

“This can be avoided if measures are taken to ensure your backyard is secure and that you’re ensuring the gate is properly latched. We know there are some breeds who are more likely to escape due to their nature, but the owner has the responsibility to ensure steps are taken to limit the animal’s option for escape.”

Residents are being urged to ensure they have adequate fencing, gates remain locked or shut and there are no holes or gaps where they can escape. If you fail to comply with this requirement, you may be liable for a maximum penalty of $880.
