Austinmer’s War Memorial will undergo a much-needed refurbishment over the coming months with the project due to be completed before Anzac Day 2019.

The work will include new level paved area for ceremonies to replace the existing uneven and aged pavers and concrete footpath, and the construction of an accessible pathway between Lawrence Hargrave Drive and the memorial.

A new granite-clad low memorial wall – of a similar style to that at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Flagstaff Hill in Wollongong – will help emphasise the significance if the site and border the new level paved area.

A new connection from the War Memorial to the existing path adjacent to the surf club will also be built to provide an additional equal access pathway from the memorial to the beach promenade.

“Our community has a respect and reverence for those who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy today and this memorial was put in place by Austinmer residents to remember those who played a role in World War One,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This work will help to maintain this area and improve the space as a place of reflection. The project will make it easier and safer for people to get to the memorial and the intention is to see it finished in time for Anzac Day.’’

The work is expected to take about eight weeks to complete and extensive tree root mapping was completed to ensure the upgrade took into consideration the protection of the Norfolk Island Pine trees.

Fencing around the site will be in place while the work is underway.

The project is part of Council’s ongoing focus to upgrade the popular Austinmer Beach precinct. The next phase will be the refurbishment of the Austinmer Beach Pavilion, which is due to start in May 2019 and run for approximately eight months.
