The Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) stood up following the Bureau of Meteorology’s warning of major flood levels in the Haughton River catchment area.
Giru residents are being urged to stay safe and keep out of floodwaters.
The present height of the Haughton River at Giru is 2.7 metres and rising. Major Creek and Powerline catchments are also presently rising.
Police and SES will be notifying Giru residents of the impending potential flood through way of flashing lights and loud hailers. Residents are asked to make necessary preparations and check on family and friends.
A request to conserve water is also currently in place for Giru and surrounding areas. The Giru Water Treatment Plant remains operational, however increased flows and turbidity in the Haughton River in the catchment negatively impact treated water production rates. Normal treated water production rates cannot be achieved until such time as turbidity levels improve following reduced flows in the Haughton River.
