Two Shire of Capel residents were named on the 2019 Australia Day Honours list, the largest in the history of the Order of Australia – recognising 1127 outstanding and inspirational Australians.
Michael Jerome Tichbon of Boyanup received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his lifetime of voluntary service to conservation and the environment and Capel resident Michael Norman Norton received an OAM for his service to the livestock industry.
Mr Tichbon’s service to the Shire spans across many decades, where he was founding president of the Capel Land Conservation District Committee and founding member of the Capel River Action Plan. He was also a Capel Shire Councillor from 1974-1982.
Mr Norton has spent his life on a cattle farm south of Capel and he was a WA delegate on the Cattle Council of Australia from 1989 to 2008, vice-president for five years and also a former treasurer.
Capel Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Ian McCabe congratulated the two recipients on their awards and thanked them for their dedication and voluntary work in the Shire.
