Abernethy Road widening project reaches next phase 30 January 2019

Construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Abernethy Road and Kardan Boulevard will begin next week, signalling the start of above-ground works on the Abernethy Road widening project.

Designed to create a safer, more accessible and less congested avenue into the Byford town centre, the project involves widening a 3.1km section of Abernethy Road to accommodate a four-fold increase in vehicle traffic by 2030.

Telecommunications services were installed late last year, while water and electrical service relocation remains on schedule. Contractors will now switch their focus to above-ground works, beginning with construction of a roundabout and drainage systems near Kardan Boulevard, and with installation of a drainage culvert at Soldiers Road.

Traffic control will be in place during this time and residents are asked to take extra care when entering and exiting Abernethy Road between 7am and 5pm.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said the project was on track for completion later this year with the lengthy and complex task of relocating underground services largely complete.

“Residents will now really start to see the project take shape as work ramps up on the above-ground phase,” Cr Rich said.

“While traffic management is in place we do ask people to take additional care while using Abernethy Road and will do our best to minimise disruption wherever possible.

“We’re really excited that the project is forging ahead because this is something the community desperately needs. By reducing congestion the road will become much safer for both motorists and pedestrians, while also making it easier for people to get to and from the Byford town centre. That will in turn help local business and contribute to the growth of a vibrant, thriving shopping precinct.”

The $19 million project is partly funded through contributions from the National Stronger Regions Fund, Main Roads WA and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
