Local legends honoured as Shire celebrates Australia Day 30 January 2019

Eight residents have been honoured for their outstanding work within the community as part of Australia Day celebrations in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
Over 800 people flocked to the Serpentine Sports Ground for a day of live music, children’s entertainment, and to celebrate alongside 50 of the newest Australian citizens, hailing everywhere from Ireland to Indonesia.
The prestigious Australia Day WA Community Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Neil and Stacey Bartlett for their contribution towards sport in the Shire. Members of the SJ Blues Cricket Club, the Bartletts were central to the formation of the club’s inaugural women’s team in 2017.
Neil is player-coach of the club, while Stacey is integral to off-field management and administration.
The Clem Kentish Community Service Award, presented for outstanding contribution over at least 20 years, went to Joan Gardner – a stalwart of many community organisations. Spanning nearly three decades, Joan has been an executive member of the Mardella Ladies Club, a founding member of the Hugh Manning Tractor and Machinery Museum, an honorary member of the Serpentine Jarrahdale Lions Club, and an active member of the Mundijong Craft Group and Mundijong Exercise Club.
She has also been integral to organising the annual Kelmscott Show and is well-known for helping cook a community breakfast each Australia Day.
Talented Maxine Martin was named Australia Day WA Community Senior Citizen of the Year for her selfless work supporting families in need. Through her connection to Crisis Care, Maxine and her fellow sewing enthusiasts create hundreds of quilts each year for those less fortunate.
Hannah “Anzie” Oatley and Meredith Kenny were each presented with the Certificate of Achievement Awards while the Rotary Service Above Self Award was presented to Diane and Ken Toohey.
“Each of these award winners embodies the sense of community spirit that we, as Australians, hold dear and it was fantastic to see their contribution recognised,” Cr Rich said.
“They don’t seek accolades or awards, but the positive impact they have on the lives of so many is something we should all celebrate.
“It was also fantastic to see the smiling faces of those who became Australian citizens on Saturday and we like to thank everyone who came to celebrate with us. I also would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters who helped make this day happen.”
