Major flooding is occurring in the Haughton River with record amounts of rain falling in the catchment area overnight.
The Haughton River at Piccaninny, Majors Creek and Powerline are continuing to rise. The river is currently at 3.2 metres in Giru with floodwaters through the town. No habitable rooms have experienced inundation.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor and Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group Chair Lyn McLaughlin advised residents to stay safe and keep out of flood waters.
“We’d like to remind everyone if it’s flooded, forget it. Not only do flood waters pose risks for motorists, we’ve also had crocodile sightings in Giru,” she said.
The Bruce Highway remains closed between Sandy Corner and Alligator creek due to flooding at the Barattas and Haughton River.
Any person who is seeking accommodation for tonight is encouraged to contact Burdekin Shire Council’s Customer Service Centre on (07) 4783 9800 to receive a list of local accommodation options available at varying prices.
