Continuing heavy rainfall in the Haughton River Catchment is preventing the Bruce Highway from reopening as floodwaters continue to submerge the Haughton River Bridge.

The Haughton River is rising at Piccaniny, Majors Creek and Powerline, and is recording a height of 3.1 in Giru. Barratta Creek is also continuing to rise and the Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) along with Queensland Police and SES will continue to monitor the current weather conditions and river levels.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin and LDMG Chair Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said significant delays were expected for motorists.

“RoadTek crews are unable to begin the process of assessing the safety of the Haughton River bridge and removing the significant amount of debris until rainfall eases and flood levels subside,” Cr McLaughlin.

“We urge motorists to be patient with the delays and to obey the instructions of police and traffic controllers.

“Importantly, we encourage everyone to stay safe and keep out of flooded waters.”

Cr McLaughlin said the LDMG will continue to keep the community informed via the Burdekin Emergency Dashboard, Burdekin Shire Council Disaster Coordination Centre Facebook page and local radio.
